One of our favorite parts of this trip was staying at this wonderful B & B in a little village called Kosec in the Julian Alps. It's this amazing area where Italy and Slovenia border each other high in the mountains. The surroundings were so beautiful and the meals our host prepared were fantastic.
When we had booked the trip (a week before) we didn't realize that it was a major summer destination for rafting, paragliding and a bunch of other fun outdoor activities. Because it was spring and it hadn't rained much recently and the snow hadn't yet melted, the Soca river was quite low and there wasn't really any rafting going on. We would love to come back in the peak season when everything is in full bloom and we could go rafting.
Here we are en route to Kosec, we'd just driven up an exciting steep mountainous pass:
We arrived in the afternoon so after getting our things brought it and settled, we headed out to hike to two small waterfalls nearby.
We headed a short distance back down the road at dusk to get some more pictures of the church in Dreznika.
A beautiful picture of spring.
The gorgeous Soca River pictured below was this amazingly beautiful turquoise hue. The picture doesn't quite do it justice.
Triglav National Park was nearby. It's the only National Park in the country. We headed out to do some hiking on our 2nd day.
More of the Soca river.
A crazy bridge running through the park. At one point we walked across that thing but I have to say I was relieved we were not in a car.
We drove up a pass above Kosec and saw some vans with paragliders one afternoon. We decided we'd better check this out even though we had to leave the the following afternoon. We inquired that evening and they informed us departures were dependent on the weather but lately afternoons had been the best time to go. Unfortunately, we discovered paragliding in the alps too late because we had to leave by the afternoon the next day. I seriously hope we can go back one day. In the interim here are some pictures of us with our feet on the ground : )
We drove by these guys and I couldn't resist a photo.
Another waterfall hike.
Predjama Castle.
The Soca river as we left the alps and headed toward Monfalcone, Italy.
We spent some time walking around Monfalcone Italy.
The town square in Monfalcone. We waiting patiently until about 7:30 before a restaurant finally opened. Apparently only tourists would even attempt to eat that early, but alas we had a 9pm flight to catch to England. The food was delicious and the owner/chef was one of the funniest characters we encountered on this little adventure.
Next up England.
