Machu Picchu - Day 4 We made it!

This was such an exciting day! We woke up early and started hiking when it was still dark, hence the headlamp in this first photo:

This was the last of very steep stairs we climbed before we could see Machu Picchu:

We made it to the sungate! We were eager to get to Machu Picchu before people riding buses started arriving from the dirt road below:

Dream trip and so happy to have made it:

Rays of sun making it over the mountain behind Erik:

With our cool guide Elestan:

A nice shot of the peak behind Machu Picchu, Wayna Picchu, that we would hike the following day:

The ruins were so impressive:

Pretty pleased at this point in the trip:

My turn:

Enjoying the beautiful view:

Dream team group shot, such great friends to hike with:

Our tour guide Elestan was telling us all about Machu Picchu when this guy popped up on the rock and everyone started taking pictures. Robin said "You've lost them to a squirrel" in her Australian accent and it still makes me laugh thinking about it.

One of the temples:

At his point I'm wondering how a trail exists on Waynu Picchu because it looks so steep:

We had lunch in Aguas Calientes as a group and we all wanted guacamole after we had it on the trek. We found a really yummy avocado appetizer and ate some yummy food:

A cool statue in Aguas Calientes with the famous condor, puma and snake. It felt amazing to stay in a hotel, take a shower, and sleep in a bed after 4 days of backpacking:
