"For forty-two years – from 1921 to 1963 - [Robert] Frost spent almost every summer and fall teaching at the Bread Loaf School of English of Middlebury College, at its mountain campus at Ripton, Vermont."
That legacy has been memorialized through the Robert Frost Interpretive Trail in the Mountains just outside Middlebury, near where Frost once taught each summer.
The trail is a short loop of probably a mile or so which we have been meaning to check out for some time. We finally got the chance one gloriously sunny day this month.
M loves being outside and cooperated for the first 30 minutes of the hike by sitting happily on Dad's back in the carrier. Here is a lovely shot of just that:
Famous Frost works are interspersed along the trail. It's a nice touch!
The real treat however, was not the poetry, it was coming across a field that was covered in wild lowbush blueberries as well as wild blackberries - both of which are in season at the moment. That was the tipping point for M and the baby carrier. No way was he going to miss out on the berry picking action. Unlike his Mom and Dad who picked 5 berries or so for every one they ate, M had a strict 1:1 policy (i.e. pick one, eat it, pick one, eat it, pick one eat it...) At times he even pilfered from his Dad's bounty - as berries in Dad's hand were faster and easier to pick than berries from the plants!
After 45 minutes or so of picking we headed back to the car with M leading the way down the trail. While his "step over exposed root skills" certainly need work, his enthusiasm for getting up and continuing on down the trail helped him lead the way for about a quarter of a mile or so back to the car.All in all, it was a great trip!
