We spent a day viewing glaciers and wildlife at Kenai Fjords National Park on a day cruise out of Seward. The ride itself was a bold undertaking, seven and a half hours at sea with a one and three year old. Both kids ended up doing really well. It helped that there were lots of stops and time for getting up and walking around. We ended up seeing: humpback whales, orca whales, sea otters, sea lions, harbor seals, puffins, Dahl porpoises, bald eagles, and a myriad of other sea birds. The wildlife highlight was likely the orca whales which ended up really close to the boat and were fun to see. The real highlight, however, came when we arrived at the aialik glacier. The glacier was going through some really active calving. We were there 20 minutes or so and saw dozens of calvings. There were two very large calvings. After the first the ranger on board mentioned it was the largest he had seen this year. The second was twice as big, and was supposedly one of the larger calving he had ever seen. Seeing and hearing these enormous chunks of ice falling into the ocean was an incredible experience.
